Indalo Man

Sitting in the garden here at Casa Sol y Luna, you might notice that we have a few unusual icons dotted around. And if you take a visit to Mojacar, you certainly won’t be able to avoid seeing them.

So… just what are they?

They’re representations of the Indalo Man; the official symbol of Almeria.

The symbol was first discovered in 1868 in La Cueva de los Letreros; a cave system near Velez Blanco, about 25 miles north of Arboleas. The symbol depicts a human-like figure, with legs open wide and  arms stretched up and over the head. It’s believed the symbol was carved around 4500 years ago.

Some think the Indalo Man refers to an old legend of a God holding a rainbow with his open arms, protecting mankind. Others think it was left there by a man who took shelter in the cave during heavy rain, later walking away towards a beautiful rainbow. Others think we’ll never really know.

But what we do know is that the Indalo Man is now seen as a powerful symbol of protection, new beginnings, and hope. And it’s even said to bring good luck, too… as long as you don’t buy one yourself! Legend has it that the Indalo Man must be presented as a gift to unleash the luck within.

So… will a stay at Casa Sol y Luna bring you the luck you’ve been searching for? Let’s find out!
